The ‘L’ in Tennis 28-June-2012
The boy and I have the same imagination. Sure, his gets filled with different things on a daily basis, but at the same time we’re running essentially the same imaginary operating system. This affords us some excellent opportunities to plant images, visions, and/or outstanding nonsense in each other’s heads using very few words. I wish I could put into words the elegant sign language he once used to, in less than 3 hand gestures, imply that I look like the Incredible Hulk when I go to Wal-Mart! But you truly had to be there. Or, at least, inside our heads.
So the most recent story goes, the other day we pulled up to a shade tree that we park under when going to a local pool, and as we came to a stop, the small building next to the tennis courts caught my eye. I recalled last summer’s nonsensical story about why the shed has the name ‘Leonard’ scrolled across it: Leonard was so bad at tennis that they locked him in this shed with nothing to do but play with tennis balls. That was more or less a year ago.
As we came to a stop and this memory made me chuckle, Ezra was apparently recalling the same story and before I could begin to speak, he both read my mind and added to the already funny story playing out in my head…
Ezra- “Poor Leonard, he’s still locked in that shed. But, when he gets out, he’ll be the world’s most awesome tennis player, because he had to learn to play without a racquet. He’ll just play with his bare hands. Yep, Leonard puts the ‘L’ in tennis…”
Then I had the visual of a lanky, awkward, pale white guy rocking a tennis match without a racquet. And I laughed and laughed and laughed…
Cheers from The ThreeFiveZero ‘L’
