That Smooth Devil, Uncle Benny! We met Uncle Benny on our very first cruise down Main Street last spring… he stands at the stop light on Main and talks to the cruisers and their passengers about their rides, and is basically the MC of the entire event… On our first pass down the strip he stopped us to let the kids talk over the microphone, and he’s been part of the family ever since! Well the kids missed the June cruise and even though we were at the July shindig, we never did get Uncle Benny cornered to say hello. Well last week Uncle Benny wrote to let us know he’d missed us, and to be sure to corner him this time!
7:30am yesterday: “Don’t forget we have to find Uncle Benny today!” Right. Could we talk about it at 9am since it’s Saturday? I hadn’t forgotten! Remember when you were a kid and were so excited about something that the day dragged on and on and on? Yeah that was yesterday here! And I have to admit I get excited about the cruises too. Well when we finally cornered Uncle Benny (he’s a popular fella and you just never know which vehicle he’s going to catch a ride on!) he said, “Wait right here.” And disappeared for a few minutes. Being the tough-as-nails sorta guy I am, I can’t readily admit that I got a little choked up when Benny came back, but… well…
Benny had been carrying around these gifts for 2 months! An Angel for Sophie and a model Camaro for Ezra! I told the kids that I think Uncle Benny has had some experience with wooing young ladies and winning the admiration of young men! But honestly it was incredibly thoughtful and was a major pick-me-up for Dad as well. The weight of the world has been especially heavy on my shoulders this week, and it’s really good to know that my kids make a lasting impression, and that they capture the hearts of the people we come across.
If you look closely at the pictures with Uncle Benny and the kids, Ezra’s mouth is literally gaping open in one of them! We’ll be building that Camaro soon on a Guy’s Night, and Sophie is still carrying her Angel around the house because of course she loves it, but also she’s afraid that her Surfer Dude doll is going to fall hopelessly in love with this Angel! Building a Camaro on Guys’ Night with my Son and hopelessly in love with this Angel. You nailed that one right on the head, Uncle Benny!

In the world we live in today adults sometimes forget to extend a hand/kind word to the leaders of tomorrow. Will Ezra’s and Sopha become leaders, who knows. They are young people that carry themselves with respect when out in public.
They are also very sweet, I’m a lucky person to have gotten to know the father and the kids, we shall be friends from now on.
